CBA History
The Organization:

The Chinese Biopharmaceutical Association (CBA) is a non-profit organization made up of professionals who have an interest in bio-pharmaceutical research and/or technology development. CBA was established in 1995 and its headquarters are located in the State of Maryland, which is adjacent to the U.S. capital city of Washington D.C. The majority of CBA members are Chinese scientists, researchers, or professors. They work in government agencies, universities, research institutes as well as in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Some are conducting pioneering research with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), whereas others are directly involved in the government regulatory process as officers of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or in the field of intellectual property as patent attorneys or as patent examiners with the Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). CBA's Executive Committee consists of research, regulatory and management professionals who, in aggregate, represent all sectors of the bio-pharmaceutical research and development communities and the industry’s regulatory agencies.

The Mission:

CBA is committed to promoting science, technology, and business development in the bio-pharmaceutical fields through information exchange and by fostering research and business collaborations. It brings scientists and business practitioners together and aims to establish links between basic and applied research, between academia and industry, and between researchers and entrepreneurs. CBA is also committed to facilitating all types of biopharmaceutical-focused collaborations between the United States and China.

CBA's Approach:

CBA intends to accomplish its mission by serving as a liaison between individual members for a myriad of scientific/technological and business needs. The goal is to help to match up expert individual CBA members with appropriate local institutes and companies that may be able to provide needed technical and manufacturing needs. CBA also hopes to provide a productive link between entrepreneurs and investors. By serving as a conduit between the bio-pharmaceutical industries in the United States and China CBA seeks to encourage the adoption of advanced scientific knowledge and new innovative technologies to China while also promoting business opportunities in both countries. CBA members have expertise in all aspects of bio-pharmaceutical fields ranging from expertise regarding recombinant DNA technology, large scale protein production to gene therapy. Many of our members thoroughly understand the FDA regulatory process and have hands-on experience with implementation of GMP and GLP manufacturing processes, various legal and legislative issues related to the commercial development of diagnostic tests, medical devices and therapeutic drugs as well as a range of business investment, financing, marketing and management know-how. CBA members’ combined knowledge, skills and experience constitutes a rich resource for the bio-pharmaceutical industry sectors in both the U.S. and China.

About Shanghai Bio-Forum

Shanghai International Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Forum (Bio-Forum), which is hosted by Modern Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Industry Office of Shanghai Municipality, has been successfully held each year since the mid-1990s. With support from Ministry of Science & Technology of the People’s Republic of China, State Food and Drug Administration, State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Science & Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, Sino-American Pharmaceutical Professionals and the Chinese Biopharmaceutical Association, Bio-Forum has progressively evolved into an influential international conference focused in the fields of biotechnology and pharmacy. It plays an important role in China’s Biotech & Pharmaceutical scientific innovation and industrialization.

The Bio-Forum has attracted an increasing number of world-renowned scientists, entrepreneurs and other outstanding specialists, including academicians from US, Russia and China, senior presidents or vice presidents of international pharmaceutical corporations such as Merck, Novartis, Roche, Lilly, Bayer, Biogen, GlaxoSmithKline, financial and investment experts from well-known biotech & pharmaceutical venture capital corporations such as MPM, Lehman Brothers, Sofinnova, and Toucan as well as senior officers and experts from SFDA, FDA, NIH, BIO, US Pharmacopeia, England Development Agency, etc. The number of attendees at the Bio-Forum has increased from 100 to above 500 during the past decade; with more than one-fifth of registrants being international participants.

Bio-Forum is intended to provide a global forum for the exchange of information, ideas and experience transcending geographical and economical barriers to facilitate the interaction and cooperation among scientists and entrepreneurs in the area of biotech & pharmaceutical industry. At each Bio-Forum, the organizing committee sets the themes and subjects according to hot topics and development trend of biotechnology & pharmaceutical industry to keep a fresh perspective at the conference. Seminars and round table conferences have been carried out involving stem cell & tissue engineering, biochip & genome, genetically engineered drugs & gene therapy, TCM modernization & internalization, biophylaxis & SARS, newly formative infectious disease & avian influenza, RNA interference & biotherapy, etc. Moreover, parallel sessions or special subjects such as "Biotechnology and pharmaceutical Entrepreneurs summit meeting", "Globalization and generic drugs", "Intellectual Property Protection", "Outsourcing a CRO service", "Venture Capital" “Global warming and environmental and agricultural concerns” are organized to facilitate the development of enterprises in seeking capital and cooperation opportunities. In order to meet the needs of medium and small-scale companies, Bio-Forum helps to make propagation and provide customized services.

Bio-Forum drives the biotech industry by bridging various organizations, including start-ups, big companies, regional and national bioscience associations, biotech centers and academic institutions. Not only earned approval from academic circles, Bio-Forum has attracted extensive attention from business and investment community. We welcome attendees and delegations from all over the globe and we will make efforts to deliver maximum value to all participants.
